Are older (pre-GM) 900s better then newer (1992) 900s?

I've owned a dozen saabs, mostly non-turbo. Currently I have a rough and ready 1989 900S that has been to hell and back and looks like it, and a pretty 1992 900S that is finicky and has a few frustrating quirks (dash lights dim, cruise control inop, had to replace the 5 spd trans with one form an '87, etc, etc..) My theory is that later 900s have been General Motor-cated and the "small improvements" are sources of problems for the previously reliable Saab. Recently I had to solve a problem with a '92 900S that was traced to the crank sensor. A huge project to fix, seems like a serious step back from the previous sensor on the distributor.
My question for the board: Do you agree that earlier Saabs without the GM influence are more reliable? At what point in time did GM screw up the 900s? I'm looking forward to reading your opinions. Thanks for writing.
