Having gone from '85 900T to '96 NG900SET, I can list the negatives of the latter: more isolated road feel [some would consider this to be a plus: i.e., Camry], more generic styling [loss of 'character'?], at least on the SE-lots more stuff to go wrong and harder to diagnose, lower ground clearance especially at overhangs, major deficiency that I physically confirmed was inability to carry a 4 ft. wide sheets of anything even diagonally in the hatch, aggravated by a floor that is not flat although the sills were designed in for chassis stiffness I'm sure, reduction in fuel efficiency-went from ~30 mpg local to ~27 and finally not the least of which is less DIYerables.
I guess I should list some positives: better power, more creature comfort features, lot better audio [with the 6-speaker setup], materials seem to be more durable, 2-way glass sunroof, integrated alarm.
Still has the clunky cruise control [just about everybody else does it better], notchy gearchange and ignition key at center console [although elevated]. I've found overall reliability to be basically unchanged.
