Did i kill my volt meter? (and disconnect of battery)

Trying to diagnose a recurring dead battery when car sits for a few days: With the engine off i disconnected the battery's negative cable. Attached positive voltage meter lead to this disconnected cable, and then touched meter's negative lead to the negative battery post.
I immediately saw the needle jump to the right, and it's then that i realized i had the meter set to 250m instead of Ohms!! Now the meter won't react to any charge or current.
Interestingly after the above incident, the car battery was COMPLETELY dead (whereas prior i had cabin power, but not enough to start the car).
I reattached the negative lead to the battery and jump started the car just to make sure it would start again and it started fine.
I don't think there is anything more i can do right now until i get another voltage meter (please tell me otherwise if that's not the case), so i left the negative battery cable off in order to try and not drain whatever charge the battery now has.
Is this the correct way to disconnect the battery (or does the positive lead need to be disconnected also?) and does the above scenario of having meter set to 250m instead of Ohms explain 'burning out' the meter?
Thanks.
