Well, the '85 8v N/A died on the way home last Wednesday. It was the ever-popular slight hesitation under load, transmogrifying into light bucking, becoming heavy bucking, & then simply shutting down. All in the space of about 8 miles. After a few minutes of rest, it started right up & drove another 1/2 mile before starting to buck again & then shutting down for the night. Yesterday I tried to restart it, & it fired up & remained steady long enough to go about 1/2 block. I towed it home.
I've looked at the CKP sensor wiring, & it looks to be in good condition. I R&R'd the connector to the black fitting on the side of the distributor several times with no effect. The wires/plugs/cap/rotor were all replaced about 4k miles ago & have been working perfectly.
It's the CIS fuel setup, so my "AMM" is the lift-plate, correct? I haven't looked at this yet, but I cleaned it & checked it for correct operation when I did the ignition stuff. I also de-tarred the throttle body, AIC valve, 5th injector & idle screw port at that time, & ran a can of BG 44K thru the system.
I haven't tried to pull off the catalytic converter yet (to see if it's plugged), but I'm wondering if a blocked cat would've progressed from "fine" to "failed" in the 8 mile distance?
The only other thing is the famous "swarm of bees" living in the fuel tank. When we bought the car this past November, the bees were already in residence. So I knew at least one new pump was due. The question is, which one? When I turn the key now, w/o turning the engine over, I immediately get the bees, but then they stop. Sometimes they come back. With a CIS system, shouldn't they be swarming all the time?
So, what's the best way to diagnose any further? Do I need a special tool to test fuel pressure? Or can I determine an intermittant pump problem electrically?
Or is there something else I should be looking at?
