Brian,
IMHO, there is always a lot of discussion on what is best for SAAB 5-speed trannys; my experience has shown that once you dump whatever is currently in the trans. at 1,000 miles, I'd opt for one of two synthetic options: the less expensive is Mobil 1's Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid (SAE 75W90), or the more sexy (and expensive) Redline MTL (Manual Transmission Lubricant). For the remaining 550 or so miles until you drop the original fluid, I'd opt for the straight 30W, as it will be less prone to breakdown than the multi-viscosity 10W30. Shear pressures between individual cogs, synchronizer rings, etc. are extremely high in manual transmissions, and orindary lubricant lose their lubricating properties much more quickly under these loads and conditions than they do inside an engine crankcase.
By the way, I'm writing you from downtown Baghdad. Wish I could enjoy something like changing my 900's transmission oil.
