The passenger side fan will run when it's temprature sensor calls for additional cooling. BOTH the driver's side and the passenger side fan will run when the AC system is turned on, and the compressor is turning. The AC system has a few shutoff relays in it for certain conditions, here's how they affect the system.
A low freon condition will keep the low pressur switch from activating. Neither fan will come on, unless the engine is too hot, then the passenger side fan comes on. The system basically acts like the AC has never been turned on.
A low temparature condition will shut off the PASSENGER side fan, and the AC compressor while the driver's side fan continues to run.
During full-throttle condition, the same thing will happen. The compressor is cut out in order to provide additional power for moving the car.
The air conditioner also has a high-temprature cutout switch. If the coolant is overheating, the compressor will be cut out, but both cooling fans will continue to run as long as the AC system is switched on.
Now, if you are experiencing an overheat condition and want to cool the vehicle off quicker, the best thing to do is hit the AC switch, since it will activate the additional cooling fan, and wire the other one on permanatley,
