a long time, and may still be, unless it's become anothe victim of the homogenization of safety laws connected with the European Union. The basic law, since around 1970, required that cars parked on the street had to have at least the street side parking lights on at night, and the car makers devised various ways of protecting the batteries by making it possible to turn on only one or the other side at a time, rather than all the parking lights at once.
