I've been reading c900 BB archives about A/C interesting in doing a proper R-134 conversion in my '85 900S, especially since I just moved to Kentucky where A/C is pretty much essential in the summer. Here is my situation, I purchased this car in August '02 from the original owner who took excellent care of it and saved all records. According to a receipt from 2000 I believe (I don't have my records folder with me), it says something like "A/C checked, needs a charge." Last July, per my father's advice, I just decided to buy an R-134 conversion kit and fill it up, just to see what would happen, I figured the R-12 had long since leaked out. Of course, I didn't realize that the system needed to be vacuumed out to get all of the oil and other contaminants out. So I filled it with some oil and about a can and a half of R-134 and wouldn't you know it I actually had functional A/C! This was in July, however, and in September it suddenly stopped working. I figured that it had simply leaked out and I would recharge again next summer. So I guess what I'm wondering is if I somehow damaged the system by not evacuating it before putting the R-134 in. The second part of my question is what is now required for a proper conversion? Would it be enough to bring it to a shop, have them vacuum out the system and then take it home and replace the O-rings and charge it with some R-134 myself?
