Testing out an SPG

I'm going up tonight to look at an 1990 SPG. However it is not road legal (no plates or insurance). So I will only be able to start it and row through the grears. Obviously I won't purchase it without a road test but what should I look for mechanically? If it goes into 5th, is it usually ok? I will check for rust in the usual spots. Thanks!
