Replacing trim strip on driver's door

I am replacing the trim strip along the top of the driver's door on my 92 900TC - it's actually a continuation of the rear spoiler I guess. Anyway, is there any particular methodology for removing the old piece? I assume I will need to take off the interior door panel first? Also, I assume the trim is held on with pressure tape - do I just yank it off, or should I heat it first to help prevent damage to the paintwork?
Thanks
Rod
