I get around 25 mpg with my V6 automatic on my daily drives which is mostly secondary roads. If I'm on a highway, it's at 75+ mph. You should see better with the 5 speed. Don't be afraid of the engine. As long as the belt was done with the newest tensioner kit, you should be good for 60K between changes. Otherwise do the update at the next scheduled 30K change. If you can't tell when it was last done, do it immediately. Yes, you may have a leaking oil cooler someday but that's about it for typical problems with the six. It won't ever be sludged-up inside like the 4 cyl. Having owned the six and scrapped a couple of 4's over the engine, I prefer the 6 over the 4. It's much more fun to drive than an NA 4 as well. I wouldn't get an NG with a 5 speed personally. The AT is just too good and probably now generally more reliable.
To each, his own. On the NG board you will find folks either love or hate the V6. The lovers own them; most of the haters are just parroting other haters. To be sure, if I lost my shirt on a car because of this issue, I'd have a sour taste in my mouth about it. I bought mine with a broken belt and fixed it so I got a beautiful low-mileage car cheap. The fact of the matter is that the broken belts are almost invariably the result of people either skipping the (free 'til 100K) belt change or cheaping out and not paying to replace the tensioner.
