Actually, what I make sure to use is "dual rated" gas/diesel oil. There is diesel-only oil, but it's not API SL rated for use in gasoline engines & can cause some kind of damage (although I don't know what). For our discussion here, whenever I say "diesel oil," I really mean "dual rated oil."
I had originally thought that Saab intended for diesel oil to be used since it's what they supplied as OE oil. In fact, many European auto makers use diesel oil in their turbo gasoline engines. If it's better for the turbo's bearings, I figger it should help protect the tranny's bearings as well. Yes, I do believe the higher level of detergents help keep the wear material off the tranny's moving parts. In a response to the link below, Stephen Goldberger also reasons that "diesel oil has more EP additive than gasoline motor oil, and might therefore be a better choice for transmissions calling for motor oil."
As I've mentioned in other posts, I believe the higher heat of the Saab tranny design warrants a more durable & heat-resistant oil. The new 5W-40 syn diesel oils seem to be a good fit here. They should allow easy start-up shifting when the temps drop far below freezing, but also maintain a durable & protective oil film when the tranny-as-heat-sink-&-oil-sump sees engine operating temps. I guess I'll really know in another month or so, eh? :-)
As I mentioned ealier, Alex C has been fanatical about caring for his tranny. The link below also has a reply of his, with his contact info embedded. Send him an email & he'll be glad to help you out any way he can! He's got a turbo, while both of my 900s are "0 psi" N/A models. Yes, turbos stress many more things, including the tranny. Yet another reason to use a more durable oil with better additives! Don't hesitate to email me with any questions.
