Sounds like ignition amplifier Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Wed, 29 Sep 2004 09:40:02 In Reply to: Engine aggressively cutting out, John86SPG, Wed, 29 Sep 2004 09:21:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Do all the lights go out, radio go away, or does the engine just die?
Since the RPM drops to zero instantly, that sounds electrical, either ignition amplifier or total lack of electrical power. Replacing the alternator is a dead-end, because even if it packed up, you've still got the battery.
It's probably not fuel, because that would cause the engine to sputter and die, not just instantly die.
I ask about lights/radio, because if you have an issue with the ignition key and a bad connection in the ON position, the engine could die instantly, and the lights would go away, along with the radio. But if the engine dies and the dash warning lights come on, then it's probably not the ignition key switch, but the ignition amplifier.
If you get the dash lights when the engine dies, replace the ignition amplifier. I assume you already have a new hall effect sensor in your new distributor. If you get no lights, then suspect the ignition switch.
