From that standpoint, I like to take care of the surface rust, too. POR 15 is great stuff. The only caveat i have about it is to use whatever you get from them as quickly as you can use it. I had 5 unopened small plastic jars of it solidify.
Both of the lower control arms on my '89 had cracks. One of them showed its ugly face in a rather up-front fashion at about 150k miles. I checked the other, and it was ready and willing to repeat the show, so both of them are new.
Every time I drive a domestic car and return to the SPG, I fall for it all over again. What a great drive.
Like you, I'm hoping to keep this SPG for at least another 5-10 years (or until *this* one gets totalled by some joker in ATL). And then get C900 number 5. (I'll end up like this *very old* gentleman I met back in Syracuse about 10 years ago - still driving his '47 Studebaker convertible.)
