I had something like this happen to me once, the engine would only turn so many degrees in either direction. It tuned out that one of the valve seats fell out of it's bore and broke and was laying on top of the piston.
This didn't happen while driving... I came back to the car after going on a hike and the car wouldn't turn over.
Your engine should turn over freely with the spark plugs out, if not your going to have to start pulling things apart, start with the flywheel area, make sure there's not a bolt or something fallen down in the bottom, then work your way around the engine from there.
