For archival purposes (and to allow me to crow) I want to say that I think I fixed it. Compression test was promising: cyl's 1-4 were 180, 170, 170, 180. Plugs a bit ashy/white, but certainly not "steam-cleaned" as indicative of head gasket failure. Waterpump replacement was, ultimately, pretty easy. Biggest problem was moving the AC compressor to get access. Allen bolts came out easy, but lower bracket bolt removal cost me a night. Bracket was not slotted, so loosening mounting bolt not enough; had to loosen alternator to slip belts, then pivot it back as far as possible to allow AC mounting bolt to clear hole.
Had flushed coolant system prior to WP replacement, topped it off after. Drove 50 miles highway/city and it's all good (so far). 326k miles now, gonna get 400k if it kills me ('88 900s 16v, na).
