John,
I hate to disagree with everyone but...
Like nearly all used cars if you can find a one that has been taken care of, has lower than average miles on it, with only 1 or 2 owners you can get a great Saab. Due to age, I would suggest one that you look at some of the last years (90-93), with a manual gearbox, non-turbo, non convertible. All of these have less that can go wrong and may have been driven a little easier. Major repairs can be expensive on these but overall safety and reliablity is good to excellent. I currently own a nice, clean 86 900s and have had two major repairs in the last 4 years. For a +15 year old vehicle which has long been paid for -that ain't bad. The main thing I would be concerneed with is having a dealership or independent Saab mechanic nearby, so when a repair is needed you can get help. Have that same mechanic check out the vehicle - which is an easy way to get the best read on a used car. Good fixes to already have done; tranny at 150k, headgasket at 100k, harmonic balancer and front suspension work. Rust is a no-go. You can check this site for what will be the "cream of the crop" for sale but for last years you can expect price between 3-5 K. A good example can make a reliable, SAFE car for a student. I wouldn't hesitate if good example could be obtained.
