You can do this. You may be able to just swap the flexible circuit board from old to new, but it may not fit. In that case, the easiest thing to do is swap the gauge faces on the tach and combo gauge (requires removing the needles; be careful, mark the original positions) and swap the whole speedo. The old pickup will drive the new speedo without an issue.
I did this on my '86 900S when I installed LH2.4... it was a bit of a pain, but for me it was necessary...
