UPDATE:

I can finally enjoy my 85 900 turbo again as I've fixed the horrible rattling from the timing chain area!

For the past two months I was reluctant to check my tensioner because I had "upgraded" to the newer style tensioner only 6,000 miles ago. Also, many experienced people on this board and elsewhere said that the new style really doesn't fail. Only one poster (wlfbronco)reported to have experienced a new style tensioner failure.

Well, you can see what happend to mine. FWIW, I'm almost positive this is the less expensive scantech version. The genuine saab version is only about $10 more and appears to have a slightly better build quality.

Just another lesson to check the obvious stuff & to remember that just because it's new doesn't mean that it's not broken.
