It's not terribly bad to replace the master with the engine in the car, although you will want a 13-mm (or is it 14-mm) crows-foot flare wrench and a couple or extensions (one with a wobble tip) to loosen and remove the hydraulic line from the master. You're right about it being two nuts that hold the master into the firewall. There's also the clip that holds the clevis pin into the clutch pedal.
Recently, I have had the pedal go dead when the slave cylinder seals suddenly bought the farm (not long after I rebuilt the master), so it's not necessarily the master cylinder. Jerome will want to look for some brake fluid drips through the port below the flywheel.
