The symptoms sound like classic fuel pump failure to me, though it could also be the Hall effect sensor.
Opening up the fuel rail and trying to start the car sounds like a really stupid idea to me unless you want to turn the car into a flaming pyre, what with fuel spraying all over if the pump is working.
Not mentioned is whether the fuel pump was making noise (loudish hum, variable tone, etc.) prior to the failure. If it was, suspect the fuel pump.
Assuming that power is getting to the pump (check with a voltmeter at the pump when someone tries to start the car), as a simple test, remove the floor in the trunk and pop off the cover over the fuel pump. With an automotive stethoscope, length of garden hose, long screwdriver, etc., listen to the fuel pump when someone else tries to start the car. Anything other than a nice smooth quiet hum is an indication of pump failure.
