The cat converter is usually a metal matrix holding pellets. It is possible that somebody previously 'gutted the cat' - rammed a rod through it. Not good for emissions, some improvement in flow.
What does it smell like? Is it a rotten egg smell? If so, that's usually a sign of sulfur in the gas. The best approach is to switch gas stations/brands. Sulfur is more common in the off-brand gas, but that doesn't mean that just because you pull into a station saying Mobile that you get name brand gas. Try a different station, and run at least a tank or two to be sure you're cleaned out.
Does the exhaust smell like burning oil? Hold your fingers behind the exhaust, and after 30 seconds or so, rub them together. It's normal for them to be wet; if they feel greasy, that could be oil. How much oil do you consume? If it's less than a quart every 1K miles or so, not a big worry.
Is the coolant level going down? A slight head gasket leak could cause some coolant burning, not enough for a cloud. But that stuff needs to come from somewhere.
With that out of the way, how do the spark plugs look? Fluffy black? Does the exhaust smell almost 'sooty'? That would be running rich. A bad Fuel Pressure regulator, sticky injector (if only one plug is black) can do it. It could be a mis-adjusted AMM. In '85, the AMM was adjustable, and the AMM has a lot more control over fuel than the O2. A mis-adjusted AMM can cause the O2 not to work right. So check those plugs. Look through the archives on Adjusting the AMM.
