And worse, even water and steam wouldn't work, they have gores cut out and seams you can't see, and also plastic backing that gives them contoured form and also makes them somewhat waterproof.
Look for a granny car in a junkyard; the saving grace of Saab is near perpetual interchangeability.
And you might find more life remains in your old ones than you think. Once warm weather comes, pull the seats and rent a Rinse 'n Vac or equal - - U-Haul has a hot-water version that's good. DON'T say it's for a car or they won't rent it to you, say you want to steam clean a couch, but be a good Scout and before you return it rinse all the sand out of the attachments and bucket - - there'll be plenty.
Use every cleaning fluid known on the worst places plus kneading and beating when thoroughly wet. Paint thinner or other solvent can get out old grease.
Then keep car open in dry situation with carpets up off the floor and even a few newspapers stuck underneath them for a week or so to let it dry right.
You can do a better job if you remove the carpet, then work on it on a clean paved driveway or even in a tub or bucket; it won't fit or stand going into a washing machine though. A hose is a nice tool, besides the rinse'n vac.
But you'll have to pull not only seats but also any console and cover over the center tunnel to get the carpet out of the car.
Even places that are worn bald or have holes right through look better cleaned, and can be covered with a good set of mats.
You might at least pull good foam to go under it from a junkyard car.
