It senses cam speed which is responsible for generating and timing the spark, it also tells the fuel pump when to run and gives you a tacho signal. When those little wires that are now hanging out of your broken connector get cut by the trigger wheel inside the distributor (and it will happen) you will be stuck wherever your car stops.
So you can either glue it back on, buy a rebbuild kit or get another distributor.
