When you hook up the meter, which re-connects the battery, the current will spike - stuff like interior lights coming on, some units charging up. Wait a minute before any readings. Since the hood is open, put something heavy on the hood open switch, if there is one. Make sure the doors are closed.
A normal quiescent current drain is on the order of 25-35 milliamps - 0.25 to .035 amps.
A battery that dies quickly - in a week or so - can also be the sign of an old, tired battery. As they age, they lose charge quicker. The maximum amount of charge they can hold also drops. Car batteries aren't designed to be completely discharged - each time that happens, they lose some life. So if the battery has gone flat a few times, it will go flat faster. It may be time for a new battery.
