Oh, it is. It's not like it's outside the realm of the possible, but it is a very difficult job. I've only done an e36 3-series with a 6-cyl, so any 4-cyl, or a 5-series would be a lot easier. The problem is getting to the upper bell-housing bolts; since they're totally inaccessible, you have to use about 3' worth of extensions and swivel joints, as well as tip the enging/trans as far back on the mounts as you can to get across the top of the trans to the torx bolt heads. Then there's the shifter and it's infamous "b*tch clip", which of course can't be seen.
Then there's getting the input shaft out of the clutch/pilot bearing. That took me 3 hours. Then there was getting the nuts back on the starter for reassembly; that took 3-3" long bolts, a welder, and 2 hours. (Next time the intake manifold is coming off.)
I did mine with the help (and lift) of a professional mechanic, and it took us 7.5 hours. I'm a pretty good wrench, but it was an awful job. It's straightforward, but, like I said, getting access to all the bolts and seperating the engine require patience and alcohol.
That clutch has 80k on it and now the rear trans seal is starting to leak. I'll put it off as long as I can!
