Yes. A spark problem can show up as a check engine light a bunch of ways. The Direct Ignition cassette has built-in self testing. Also, such poor combustion would set off a bunch of emissions-related faults, and those light the CEL.
Most likely it isn't the spark plug, but the DI cassette that has the problem. But I would have assumed that the dealer did more than just diagnose it - he probably would have fixed it. Or at least, one would hope.
The CEL is the engine control computer's only way of letting you know something is wrong. It could come on for something incredibly minor, or very dire, or anything in-between. In general, CEL comes on for any emissions- related problem - something that could cause the car to be out of emission spec. A sensor can fail, and the engine control can accomodate the failure - it will still drive fine, but that sensor was there for a reason. The engine won't be running quite as well.
Two recommendations-
(1) take it to a dealer and get the codes read out.
(2) Try future postings to the NG900 board. That's for 900s between '94 and '98. This board is the classic 900, which was '93 and earlier. This isn't snobbishness; they are quite different cars, and you'll probably get better answers over on the NG900 board.
