All is back together now: new belts, T-stat, flushed/replace coolant w MB, and changed the oil. Everything appears to function normally again, and it actually seems to be running slightly cooler than has been the norm; just over 25% on the temp guage.
Why the belts failed is another question: From looking at the remains it seems that the inner belt failed 1st, sort of disintegrated into smaller strands and the flailing pieces took the outer. The remains of outer are in good condition except for being cut rather cleanly.
Mail pulley was replaced 3 yr ago, and I did the Alt bushings about 1 1/2 yr ago so it wasn't vibration. I'm thinking the belt just wore out. It's about 3 yr old & 60K miles. It looked OK last time I changed the oil, (every 3 K) but who knows....
Hopefully no stresses on the head that will appear in the future.
