I can't get it......

to move out of park. On my 86 900s the car is stuck in what seems to be park. The car will rock forward and back but when moving the automatic shifter there is no shift from park. My mechanic looked and the gear selector cable is connected to the tranny. I was straveling 50mph when the front wheels stoped moving and I skidded to a stop.
What can I do? I took apart the housing around the gear shift and everthing looks to be intact except for one wire. It broke off from the soder. It is a green wire connected to the gear shift. Could this be a safety thing? Help, i like the car but and don't want to get rid of it.
