Hi Russell,
I take Arabiflora's comments as they stand. What's the Rush? The NA 2 liter Saab 16valve is a strong performer, lots of good midrange torque, but certainly no hot rod. However, neither is that vintage 900 Turbo. FWD Saabs have always lost at the line in a drag race. Over the road and around the curves at high speeds is the Saab's preference.
I have an excellent '89 SPG Turbo that can go like a rocket, yet I prefer not to push it hard, since I also want it to last at least 250k miles, and the PRICE of GAS is a major concern for every American today. I am always driving it as professionally and as gently as I can, using all the power and torque available when needed for safety, passing, merging, etc, BUT staying just below turbo boost. It's kind of a game with me. I am always impressed by how well the unboosted 16v performs if driven and shifted with care and thought. It's enough for 90% of my driving.
My suggestions: Tune your S well using high quality products, keep clean oil and filters in it, add a freeer flowing sport exhaust, add a few more pounds pressure to the tires (I like 35 PSI) for best gas milage and handling, unload all the heavy crap from the trunk, and enjoy the heck out of it. If none of this gives you the satisfaction you seek.....well, Get That 900 Turbo, Now!
