I've done this three times now. I simply moved the shifter into different gear positions, then moved the transmission lever to mate up to the position that had the best angle to get the nuts on. After all is done, get yourself some massive wire ties. The real big ones. Slip them around the assembly one on each side. The nuts and bolts will keep them in place. This will help prevent it from tearing again. All three of mine are still going strong. Some folks use hose clamps, but they can prevent proper clearance when shifting if not placed right. Those one time cv boot style clamps would actually be perfect for this if you could find the right size.
