window winder knob construction?

The window winder knob on my '89 900 became stiff, then came off in my hand. The arm of the winder is OK, just the knob came off. When it did there was a pinging noise as if a clip of some sort had sprung away into hiding. The knob goes back on and turns on its spindle but isn't happy to stay located. After searching the footwells the only possible candidate for a missing clip is what appears to be a spring washer but I cannot figure out how this would fit within the knob. Are the handles rebuildable or will I have to replace the arm as well?
TIA
Matt
