but, it turns out the placement of the tab on the bottom of the gear does not really matter if the antenna is not installed. it's job is to turn the smaller gear that lines up 3 electrical contacts and tells the motor when to shut off. all i did was reassemble with the antenna out and cycle the motor on and off a few times. keep in mind the motor will not run unless the unit is grounded so if you have the whole assembly out, you will need to hold the antenna mast tube against the body of the car to ground it. i reassembled and then installed and followed the rest of the directions on eeuroparts. feed it in the top and turn the radio off, it will retract the antenna.

only issue i had was the collar for the old antenna. i spent about 20 minutes with a small screwdriver and needle point pliers pulling it out.
