Pulling the wheel is nothing compared to the amount of work you are contemplating. and also, pull the shifter boot and shaft (I assume it's a stick.) It's only 3 screws and the lower console will come out in one piece that way. And when you remove the lower knee bolster, you can better access the lower switches and all the wiring behind the dash.
Label EVERYTHING, particularly note the electrical connections on the air distribution switch; you WILL screw those up (ask me how I know.) Replace all the dash lights while you're in there too
