I think that the typical configuration is a brass contact making spring-loaded contact onto the steel ring. When the contact wears down, the spring is beyond its working range, and positive contact is lost.

The steering wheel I'm referring to is a SAAB/MOMO one with an adaptor hub- I'm not sure how the brushes are held inside of standard equipment steering wheels.

To post a picture here, the image file has to be hosted on a website somewhere- usually your Internet Service Provider will give you a certain amount of space as part of your standard agreement. Once the picture is available online, then you put the full URL in the box labeled "Optional Image URL:"

For instance, I entered http://home.hvc.rr.com/irietom/86SPG.jpg
