AMM/o2 sensor (was running rich/bad idle)

Ok, so my bouncing idle is gone alomg with the clouds of smoke and soot and raw gas smell...
The culprit seems to have been the AMM. I put another in and it stopped running rich, but would not idle cold. I adjusted the AMM for higher resistance and the cold idle got a bit better.
Now here's the thing-- I didn't get any voltage swing on the o2 sensor until I adjusted the AMM. Next I checked the o2 signal at the test connector-- at idle it looks like it should, but above idle, it stays low. I adjusted the AMM as high as it would go. Now it stays mostly high at idle, occasionally going low, but it still never goes high above idle. When I check at the o2 sensor itself I never see a voltage much above .6 I've never seen it go to .7.
Do I also have a bad o2 sensor? I've tried two. One is better than the other, but neither goes above .6. Did all that soot and stuff ruin them when the car was running super-rich?
The car seems to run just fine now, but I don't want to do any damage by having a lean mixture.
