cooler air=more boost with less knock. depending on your setup, the apc system will dial in more boost until it detects knock. difference can be big. on my car, it'll get mid red on a cool day, upper yellow on a 95' day with a/c running. that said, that doesn't sound like what's going on. sounds like you may be running on base boost (though that should be constant boost) with a non-working apc, or that your base boost is severely maladjusted.
