I think that the idle settles in at a lower rpm is because you are putting a load on the engine. Try this: turn off the A/C and then turn on the lights, blower motor at full (use the setting that makes the blower run at the 4th. speed), headlights on, rear defogger on, and windshield wipers on and step on the brakes. This will put about as big a load on the alternator that you can and see what happens to your idle. If the idle drops considerably (like when you put on the A/C) and you have ruled out vacuum leaks I would still suspect a bad AMM.
