When that shifter box bushing went bad in my '89, it was way more than 1mm of sloppy sideways motion. The rubber part of the bushing was torn & grossly out-of-place. I replaced it all from the inside without disconnecting the shift rod.
The bushing set has 2 parts, a white nylon part that's split; this can spread just enough to get it onto the shaft. Then there's a big rubber bushing that can be stretched over the loop on the aft end of the shift rod (inside the box). Both of these seemed like they were just about ready to break but they went on.
Once the 2 parts are on the shaft, you can put the nylon bushing inside the rubber bushing; then work the rubber bushing into the hole in the shift box.
