'89 is the first year larger pinion bearing in the transmission. It's better than the earlier ones in that respect. Not quite as durable as the one in your 9-5, though. The transmissions in C900s were the weak point of the cars, but they can be treated with respect and last a long time.
Depending on who you talk to, '89 fuel injection computers (ECUs) have a modest history of failures. The good news is that ECUs from '90 onwards Classic 900 Turbos will drop right in. The ECU in my '89 SPG died, and I've put ECUs from '90 900S, 90 900T, 89 9000T in it and it's running with the one from the '90 900T now. The fuel mapping in the 900S ECU was a bit lean in the upper end, but the EPROMs can be swapped.
How is your area for rust? That's the most difficult part of dealing with a restoration for mere mortals like me. DougM is an miracle worker in C900 metalwork, but he's a bit far from you.
I've gotten used to the automatic seatbelts but you might be lucky if Australia didn't have them as a requirement.
I've had my '89 SPG for 6 years now and am still very happy with it.
