If you don't take out the carpets and foam pads, it will never completely dry, and definately rust out the floorboards. I know, I've fixed 3 or 4.
Taking out the carpets takes about an hour. Its definately not a "bear" or a job. While you have them out, I bet you'll find rust to fix on the floor. You'd probably also be wise to replace the catalytic converter heat shield. Its probably rusted through, and the carpets need to come out of the car to replace it.
You really just need a set of torx bits and allen keys to remove the interior. In fact, I think the trunk tool kit has everything you need.
