It might be that part of the ignition cylinder broke. I had this happen to me. There's a thin part of the aluminum key cylinder down where it engages with the gearset - this section can fatigue and break after a decade or so of use.
In my case, the cylinder broke in such a way as to pull right out so the car could be started with a screwdriver.
To find out just what has happened, you'll want to remove the driver's seat and remove the console. Then you can see the aluminum shifter assembly. Underneath the rear of it, right in line with the lock cylinder, you can feel the gearset (it'll be greasy and probably surrounded with lint, gum wrappers, and old, corroded coinage). If the gearset doesn't turn when the key is turned, then the cylinder is broken. If it does, then the problem is further inside the shifter assembly.
If it is the lock cylinder, you'll see a light circular spot on the driver's side of the shifter assembly, at about the 10-o-clock position relative to the ignition cylinder - that's a soft metal plug that can be drilled out. Then you take a hammer and punch to drive a small pin into the lock cylinder and it should pull out with the key.
If it's just the lock cylinder that has gone south, you don't have to remove the whole shifter assembly like the Bentley manual implies. I made that mistake when I did the repair on my 900S.
When the lock cylinder on mine failed, I pulled out the old one and took it to the local dealer, who took the number off the side and ordered a new one. A good locksmith should be able to do the same thing. 8 years ago, it cost me about $50; good question as to what it would cost now.
If you decide to go in and DIY, let us know and somebody here will talk you through the procedure in more detail.
