light comes on when fluid is low, that's the only trigger, so pads other stuff does not affect it. 1st question is, are you low on brake fluid. If so, top off with Dot 4, and start search for why it is low. If not, the sensor is in the screw cap, with a couple of wires coming off. Check the wires to make sure they are connected and not broken or otherwise damaged. Go from there.
OBTW, brake fluid is hydrophilic. If you have never had it changed, you are actively corroding your brake system. This is a good opp to have it flushed, filled, and bled.
