Alternator Damage?

I installed a used Starter on my 1990 900 non turbo. I did not disconnect the batery before doing so. In the process of installing the starter, the red "hot" wire came in contact to a ground and sparked a couple of times. At this point I disconnected the battery.

When finished, I connected the battery and it started right up, I entered the code for the radio. The next morning I backed the Saab out of the garage and let it idle to warm up. I came out about 10 min later to find that it was not running. When I went to restart, it would not turn over.

I tried to start it this morning but it would not turn over and the radio was asking for the code. It started with a jump but it sounded like the starter was still engaged, it was making a screeching sound.
At this point I shut it off and drove something else to work.

When it was running I did not see a light indicating that it was not charging, but it was sure acting like it(dash lights were getting dim, etc. I did make sure I had a good connection to the battery.

Prior to changing the starter, the Saab ran great and did not have a problem with the battery or charging system. Is it possible that I damaged something?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated
