HELP!!

My car (1993 900S 16valve non-turbo 2.1L engine) engine is intermittently and unpredictably stalling. Local specialist is SURE it is becaues my crank sensor is bad ($300 part). Usually will restart instantly up to several hours later (cooling off?).

Last week, I considered trying to replace the distributor with the pre-1989 version that has the hall sensor in it, much more reliable because it is away from the heat (and possible leaking hot oil) of the crankshaft area. The distributor mounted hall sensor should last for the rest of the life of the car.

Big development: in speaking with the local saab specialist, he says he has a "modification" (which he is keeping secret) that solves the crank sensor problem for good. I am 99% sure it involves replacing the distributor with a pre-89 distributor that includes the hall sensor, and feeding that signal to the EZK ignition control unit.

Has you ever tried swapping the post-89 distributor out, and installing a pre-89 distributor ?? Are the gears compatible ?? Is the hall sensor in the distributor electrically compatible with the crank sensor version ??
