Transmission shifting terribly

As most of you probably know, the reverse gear seems to go bad in the 900 such as mine- 87 SAAB Turbo 900. I fiddled with mine after taking the plate off of the side of the transmission for access. Of course I fashioned a new reverse shift lever after finding mine had already been altered to give enough "umf" for the seller to unload on unsuspecting me. Needless to say I have never gone back to that Saab mechanic for anything. My first attempts at alteration seemed to be miraculous, however, as I backed the car out of the garage with a strong engagement of the reverse gear, stupid me, shifted to first and found I was still in reverse-and in all other gears I was also in reverse. I tweaked and tweaked with my terrible machinist skills until I found a somewhat unhappy medium of being able to flutter the clutch pedal to give me just enough reverse to not be too terribly embarrased backing out of spaces and such. Sometimes with an all to familiar terrible crunching grind. Is there anybody out there who has a better solution than pulling the engine/trans and rebuilding/replacing? If not, is there anybody out there with a newer, used replacement trans? I heard that any manual 5 speed from 87 up to 91 will work great. Anybody????
