'92 900 T new VR, alt. checked and OK - light still on

I had been having some trouble starting my '92 900 Turbo lately. It would start up and then die. After giving it a little gas it would idle and would run fine. Finally, on Saturday, the battery light came on dimly. Yesterday I took the alternator out and had it tested. Battery is charging at around 11.8V. The alterantor tested fine. Took out the VR and one brush was worn down about halfway and the other was barely visible and shows signs of arcing. I replaced the VR with a Bosch, got the alternator back in the car. Checked the wires and all were OK. Started it up and the battery light is still on. My question is this: on the armature inside the alterator where the VR brushes make contact, there is some carbon deposit (looks like it's from the brush that was arcing). Can I clean this off for better contact with the armature? Or could this not be a problem? Do I need a new alternator even though it tested fine?
