i know i should give the others a chance to say something but im just haven a ball
.. i tend to call my car a turbo 900 and when it was bad ,..... no i didnt spank it i just put new plugs in it and i say, my bad turbo turned into a very very good turbo, but if im a little off track here and your referring to the turbo unit, my bad...

if the turbo unit was bad you would know it, the unit would send a cloud of white or blue smoke out your tail pipe much like if you blew your head gasket.
for a turbo unit its much like this < it works > or it dont
and it will make sure you know its not working, no dought bout that,

im thinking along the lines of your amm not functioning correctly, that is giving you the funky rpm`, s and the running rich, might want to test it to see if its freaken out on you,
but seeing how you said its a 80, just woundering how many miles you racked up with it, is it a runner or a sitter,
( a car thats a runner is born to run and if something goes wrong with the motor, a miss fire, voltage drop, it can be rounded down to a area
or the car, seeing how the car was just running fine a few days ago,
however on a sitter,
the car was made to sit there and look nice, and it will do a good job at this to, and when you want to run the sitter for lets say a 1000 mile trip be sure the sitter will break down on you, for one reason, if the car was just sitting for 10 yrs the gaskets would dry out crack, seals would dry up from never being hit with oil then when the motor starts. wear hits the seal from lack of it,
now back to your car if its a sitter the list can go on from just being a amm
but if its a runner id round it down to the amm. but dag being a 80 you have a amm, heck that almost back with the dinosaurs.
perhaps start with a full tune up.
