Oil probably not related to mpg. But make sure there is not an oil leak. Saabs should use very little oil between changes.
A sudden mpg drop might be the fuel pressure regulator. It has a diaphram that can break and if so, the fuel pressure runs full blast even at idle. This causes a rich mixture and bad mpg.
To test, find the fuel pressure regulator. Closer to passenger side on top of engine. It is connected to the pipe that feeds the fuel injectors, at the end of the pipe closest to the firewall. It has a rubber vacuum hose connected to it that runs over to the intake. Pull the hose off at the intake connection(not regulator end) and see if gas runs out or it smells of gas. If gassy, then the fuel pressure regulator is shot. If no gas, I would apply a vacuum to the hose(I just give it a quick suck). If it holds a vacuum, the fuel pressure regulator is OK.
If OK, the next thing I would suspect is a fuel injector that is stuck open. If you remove the sparkplugs, and one is black and sooty, that's the stuck injector. Clean spark plug. Before I would pull the injectors to clean, I would try a bottle of Techron(not a Techron blend, the straight stuff). That will usually clean the injector. If still bad mpg, then I'd pull the injector rail and clean and test each of the injectors. Replace anu that are bad. I'd have a shop test the injectors, but diy is possible. Consult Bentley manual for test procedures.
You didn't mention whether this is a turbo. If so, make sure the hose to the side of the distributor is connected.
