in fact, mine happened when i was waiting in line to cross through the peace arches from canada back into the US. there was a 3 hour long line and the temp kept rising, i ended up shutting off the car and just did what the motorcycle guys were doing, pushing ahead a car length at a time until it got moving.
i'm sure you could get it to over heat that way, hot engine air being blown across the rad. but i never let it get that far, i shut it down when it got too high.
i don't think i even realized it until i watched the fans spin down once when i was under the hood and noticed they were spinning in opposite directions...
